Interactive Demo & Showcase

Slingshot Flight, Trajectory Prediction & Live Audio/EV Scrubbing

Watch how the slingshot slider behaves under interactive pointer input: pull down to stretch elastic bands, preview the dotted trajectory arc and landing pin, release to launch, or drag horizontally for standard linear adjustment.

Testing & Walkthrough Guide

  1. 1Grab the slider thumb and drag horizontally for standard linear adjustment.
  2. 2Pull down vertically to engage the slingshot aiming mode and stretch elastic bands.
  3. 3Observe the real-time dotted parabolic trajectory arc and predicted landing value.
  4. 4Release to launch the thumb along its flight path with gravity acceleration.
  5. 5Watch the thumb land on the track baseline and trigger an impact ripple animation.

About This Project

A playful, physics-driven slingshot slider component designed for React and Tailwind CSS. Slide normally along the horizontal track for precise parameter adjustments, or pull down to slingshot the knob across a parabolic trajectory arc. Features zero idle CPU overhead (runs requestAnimationFrame on-demand only), full pointer/touch support, customizable step quantization, signed readouts, comprehensive keyboard accessibility, and zero-setup NPX component scaffolding.

Key Features & Capabilities

Key Features & Capabilities

Slingshot Ballistics & Parabolic Flight

Real-time trajectory prediction rendered on an HTML5 canvas overlay with physical gravitational acceleration and landing impact ripples.

0% Idle CPU On-Demand Animation Loop

The requestAnimationFrame loop activates exclusively during aiming and flight, immediately shutting down when idle to conserve battery and CPU/GPU cycles.

Zero-Setup NPX Component Importer

Developers can scaffold the component directly into their project with a single command (`npx react-throwable-slider`), just like shadcn/ui.

Dual Interaction Model (Scrub vs. Launch)

Smooth horizontal scrubbing for micro-adjustments seamlessly transitions into slingshot projectile aiming when pulled vertically past threshold.

Quantization & Signed Value Readouts

Supports arbitrary step quantization intervals (e.g. 0.1, 1, 15) and automatic +/- signed formatting for audio gain, EV, and temperatures.

Full Keyboard & Screen Reader Accessibility

WAI-ARIA compliant slider semantics, keyboard controls (Arrow keys, Home, End), and pointer event capture for unified mouse and touchscreen support.

Technical Architecture & Stack

Technical Architecture & Stack

Built with React 19 and strict TypeScript, styled with Tailwind CSS, and powered by an optimized HTML5 Canvas 2D rendering layer. State updates are minimized by managing high-frequency projectile coordinates in mutable refs and synchronizing the DOM thumb position at 60/120 FPS, only committing final quantized values to React state upon landing.

Key Technical Highlights

  • Hybrid Canvas + DOM architecture separating high-speed physics from React render cycles
  • On-demand requestAnimationFrame loop that stops completely when the component is at rest
  • Device pixel ratio (DPR) scaled Canvas 2D overlay ensuring sharp trajectory rendering on Retina screens
  • Unified Pointer Events API with setPointerCapture for smooth dragging across window boundaries
  • Imperative ref handle (ThrowableSliderHandle) exposing reset() and getValue() methods
  • Bundled CLI executable for shadcn-style component installation via npx

Key Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Key Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Challenge

Eliminating battery drain and CPU overhead caused by continuous requestAnimationFrame loops in web UI components.

Solution & Architectural Decision

Replaced the continuous animation loop with an on-demand reactive lifecycle: RAF starts only upon pointer down / aiming, animates flight and ripple effects, and cancels itself immediately once the thumb settles on the baseline.

Challenge

Disambiguating intentional horizontal scrubbing from vertical slingshot aiming gestures without input lag.

Solution & Architectural Decision

Implemented a directional hysteresis threshold in pointer move handlers: vertical deviations within 6px maintain standard horizontal linear scrubbing, while crossing the threshold activates rubber band stretching and trajectory projection.

Challenge

Ensuring sharp canvas trajectory arcs across varying screen pixel densities and responsive container resizes.

Solution & Architectural Decision

Integrated ResizeObserver and window.devicePixelRatio scaling on the canvas backing store, updating physical canvas dimensions while maintaining CSS layout coordinates.

Deep Dive

Interactive Physics Mechanics

The core innovation of the Throwable Slider is blending traditional linear UI controls with projectile physics without introducing input lag or layout jitter.

// On-demand requestAnimationFrame ensures 0% idle CPU
if (!isAiming && !isFlying) {
  cancelAnimationFrame(rafId);
  return;
}

Motion Equations

The parabolic flight trajectory is evaluated using discrete Euler integration:

$$x(t) = x_0 + v_x \cdot t$$ $$y(t) = y_0 + v_y \cdot t + \frac12 g \cdot t^2$$

Where gravity $g$ and impulse multiplier $k$ can be tuned via component props to simulate different physical environments (e.g. Earth vs. Lunar gravity).
